Rising sign calculator
What's your rising sign? See how people see you first.
Uses your city's historic time zone. Nothing is sent until you save.
The Ascendant changes every two hours
That is why the birth time is the one field you cannot guess. Enter the date, exact time and place, and the rising degree is calculated from the local sidereal time and latitude.
Rising sign guides
The Ascendant in each sign: what people notice first, how the manner works and which planet rules the chart.
Your rising sign, or Ascendant, is the degree of the zodiac that was coming over the eastern horizon when you were born. It changes roughly every two hours, which is why the birth time is the one field you cannot guess. It describes your first manner, your physical style and the way you enter a room.
How this is calculated
The position
The calculator finds the local apparent sidereal time at the birth instant, then solves for the ecliptic degree rising on the eastern horizon at that latitude.
The zodiac
The Ascendant is checked against the Midheaven and the twelve house cusps. Placidus houses are used by default; above the polar circles, where Placidus is undefined, the chart switches to whole sign houses and says so.
The clock
The birth instant is resolved from the city's IANA time zone, including historic offsets. A time inside a spring-forward gap is moved to the first real minute after the gap.
Is the rising sign the same as the ascendant?
Yes. Rising sign and ascendant are two names for the same thing: the zodiac sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the minute you were born.
Astrologers often use "ascendant" for the exact degree, such as 14 degrees Virgo, and "rising sign" for the sign itself. The ascendant also marks the start of the first house, so it sets up the houses of your whole chart.
Why your exact birth time matters
Your birth time matters because the rising sign changes about every two hours. As the Earth turns, all twelve signs pass over the eastern horizon in one day, so the ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes.
Two hours is only the average. Depending on how far north or south you were born, some signs rise in under an hour and others take three hours or more. If you were born near the edge of a sign, a time that is ten or fifteen minutes off can change the result.
The best source is your birth certificate or hospital record. A parent's memory is the next best thing, but ask how sure they are. A time like "around breakfast" is a range, not a minute.
What if you don't know your birth time?
If you do not know your birth time, you cannot find your rising sign with confidence. Rather than guess, the calculator shows a noon chart with no rising sign.
To track the time down, request your full birth record from the place you were born, check baby books or old letters, or ask relatives. Some astrologers offer birth time rectification, which works backward from big life events to estimate the time. Treat that as an educated guess, not a fact.
In the meantime, your Sun sign and most planets do not depend on the time. Your Moon sign usually does not either, unless the Moon changed signs on the day you were born.
Rising sign vs sun sign vs moon sign
Your Sun, Moon and rising sign are often called your big three, and each one answers a different question.
- Sun sign: your core identity and what you are working toward. It depends on your birth date.
- Moon sign: your emotional needs, what calms you and how you react in private. It changes about every two and a half days.
- Rising sign: your first impression, your style and how you approach new things. It changes about every two hours.
A simple way to remember it: the Sun is the person, the Moon is the heart, and the rising sign is the front door. Strangers and new coworkers meet the front door first, which is why some people relate more to their rising sign than their Sun sign. You can find all three at once with the big three calculator.

Early vs late degrees of the ascendant
Each sign covers 30 degrees, and where your ascendant falls inside that range adds a little nuance.
- Early degrees (about 0 to 9): many astrologers read these as a fresh, strong expression of the sign.
- Middle degrees (about 10 to 19): the sign tends to feel settled and typical.
- Late degrees (about 20 to 29): the sign can feel more seasoned, and some people relate to the next sign too.
Late degrees also carry a practical warning. If your ascendant sits at 28 or 29 degrees, a birth time that is a few minutes off could mean you are really the next sign. If both descriptions fit you, that may be why.
Questions
How do I find my rising sign?
Enter your birth date, exact time and place in the calculator above. The Ascendant moves through the whole zodiac in 24 hours, so it changes sign roughly every two hours. An exact birth time is the field that decides it.
What is my rising sign if I do not know my birth time?
It cannot be calculated reliably. A guess of an hour can move the Ascendant by half a sign, and the sign itself can change. Without a time, the calculator gives a noon chart with no rising sign and explains why.
What does the rising sign change?
It changes the house cusps, so it changes which house each planet sits in. It also changes the chart ruler, the planet that rules your rising sign, which is a useful thread through the rest of the chart.
Why is the rising sign different from my Sun sign?
The Sun sign is the Sun's position on your birth date and stays the same all day. The rising sign is the horizon at your birth minute and place, so it changes every couple of hours.
What is the Ascendant in astrology?
The Ascendant is the same point as the rising sign, measured as a degree on the ecliptic. Astrologers use the words interchangeably, though the degree matters for house calculation.
Can my rising sign be the same as my Sun sign?
Yes. If you were born around sunrise, the Sun was close to the eastern horizon, so your rising sign is often the same as your Sun sign. People with this double placement often say the sign's traits feel extra strong.
Does my rising sign change as I get older?
No. Your natal rising sign is fixed by your birth time and place. Some astrologers also follow a progressed Ascendant that moves slowly over the years, but that is a separate technique and does not replace your birth chart.
How accurate is this rising sign calculator?
The math is precise: it uses the exact time, the historic time zone and the latitude and longitude of your birth place. The main source of error is the birth time you enter, so a time from a birth certificate gives the most reliable result.
What if I only know my birth time roughly?
Try the earliest and the latest time it could be. If both give the same rising sign, you can be fairly confident in it. If they differ, you were born near a sign boundary and need a more exact time to know for sure.
