Houses in astrology

The houses divide a birth chart into twelve areas of life. The planets describe what is happening, the signs describe the style, and the houses describe where it shows up: money, home, work, partnership, rest.

What a house is

A house is a segment of the chart measured from the Ascendant, the degree rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. The first house begins there and the wheel is divided into twelve. Because the Earth turns, the Ascendant changes roughly every two hours, which is why the houses depend on an exact birth time.

The cusps are the boundaries between houses. A planet near a cusp can be read in both houses, and astrologers disagree about how wide that overlap should be. The practical answer is to read the planet in the house it occupies by degree, then notice the next house as a secondary tone.

The twelve houses in order

The first house is identity, the body and the first impression. The second is money, possessions and self-worth. The third is communication, siblings, short trips and daily learning. The fourth is home, family and the private foundation. The fifth is creativity, romance, play and children. The sixth is work, routine, health and service.

The seventh is partnership and the contract with another person. The eighth is shared resources, intimacy, debt and transformation. The ninth is belief, travel, higher education and the search for meaning. The tenth is career, reputation and public role. The eleventh is friendship, community and the future. The twelfth is rest, privacy, grief and the things that dissolve.

Angular, succedent and cadent

The houses are grouped by rhythm. Angular houses begin at the four angles: the first, fourth, seventh and tenth. They are the most visible and the most active. Succedent houses follow them: the second, fifth, eighth and eleventh. They stabilise and build on what the angular houses start. Cadent houses close each quadrant: the third, sixth, ninth and twelfth. They are about learning, adjustment and preparation.

A planet in an angular house tends to be obvious in the life. The same planet in a cadent house may be just as important but more private, more reflective, or more visible in a supporting role. This is one reason two charts with the same planet in the same sign can read very differently.

House systems and the unknown time

Placidus is the most common house system in modern Western astrology. It divides the sky by time and produces unequal houses at most latitudes. Whole sign is older and simpler: each sign is one house, starting with the rising sign. Above the polar circles Placidus becomes undefined, which is why some tools switch to whole sign there.

If the birth time is unknown, houses cannot be calculated honestly. A noon chart can still show the planets and signs, but the Ascendant and the house cusps are placeholders. Read the planets in sign, say clearly that the houses are unavailable, and do not invent a rising sign to fill the gap.

Put it to work

The explanation is useful. The calculation is more useful. It takes one form and gives you the exact degree.
